METATEMPUS is back!

It might have taken us a while, but we’re back! Some of you might have been with us from the very beginning, way back in the summer of 2005 and watched us climb our way through newsletters, competitions, club night nights and film screenings and some of you might be here for the very first time. But we all share one thing in common; we all have a purpose. Whether we chose it ourselves, or had it given to us by God (or Gods) or the universe itself, it doesn’t matter, we all have one and that’s all that matters.

Ours has been clear from the very beginning. As Jonahh continues to craft his poems and hunt down film projects, he does what he does with one thought ahead of all the others in his mind; he wants to break open the mystery of consciousness. He wants to know what that spark is that lies in the core of each of us.

And as Samuel continues to study Philosophy and learn music, he is also taking on new challenges and will soon begin teaching his very own course. But he too is determined to understand a mystery of his own choice; the ever elusive time, forever sceptical that it actually exists.

So, we might have disappeared for a while but rest assured we’re here again. While we work on getting the Metatempus machine back on track, you might like to stop my our blogs and see what we’ve been up during our time away:

Philosophy Bites Back!

INTRODUCTION TO IDEAS IN
MODERN PHILOSOPHY

10 week course in London - starts 20 April 2009

Was the war in Iraq justified? Should nature be preserved because it helps us to survive or does it have value in itself? What exactly am I and what will we be in the future? How do films like The Matrix and Watchmen contribute to philosophy? Can you tell what time is without telling what a clock does?

Each week we will be going over key text and arguments from various Philosophers and discussing how these ideas can be applied. In some cases we will also be discussing how these ideas are utilised in film and assessing how films “do” Philosophy.

This course will be of particular interest to anyone who has ever had questions like these and would like to know how philosophy can help them think through some of the many more questions and problems our society faces today.

You might be surprised just how much you already take part in philosophical thought and discussion and part of this course has been designed to help bring those ideas out into the open and to test them against opposing or alternative ideas. It’s simply a course for anyone who has ever questioned, wondered or struggled to understand why things are they way the are and how they could be different. It won’t give you the answers, but might give you many more options and certainly many, many more questions!

Issues such as environmentalism, climate change, war, terrorism, justice, cloning, technology, existentialism, reality, time and consciousness will be discussed during this 10 week course using arguments from philosophers such as Kant, Descartes, Sartre, Russell, Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein, Danto and J. S. Mill.
